Mesilla Valley Transportation Solutions has developed a more accurate method to evaluate fuel-saving technologies.

If fleets rely on unreliable data, how can they make informed decisions when purchasing fuel-efficient equipment and technologies?

In the HDT Talks Trucking podcast, guest Daryl Bear talked about a solution to this problem.

Bear is the chief engineer and chief operating officer of Mesilla Valley Transportation Solutions. He is a mechanical engineer with 20 years of experience in motorsports and automotive research and development. His background in racing engineering and testing provides a more effective and accurate method for quantifying the fuel savings of heavy trucks.

"If there is a more accurate or simpler way to do this, this is what we are going to do," Bell said. "We found that the testing methods the trucking industry has relied on so far are indeed very unreliable."

Bell said he found that testing like a car can quantify even the smallest changes.

When you buy an off-the-shelf product, we often hear the team say that they will automatically reduce the supplier’s fuel saving estimate by half.

"Fuel saving is a precise science. It has no emotions. The problem is that people really don't understand science or quantify it. As a racing engineer... I have the ability to understand these things. I started to notice the weirdness. The model of... and science has just been unraveled. The entire industry is measured in percentages, and it does not apply to science. When you look at power and energy, suddenly, you can predict what kind of product will be kept in the fleet middle."
