Recently, lychees with a sky-high price of 2,098 yuan/kg appeared on the shelf of a supermarket in Beijing. Earlier, some netizens said that they bought a box of lychees called "Zengcheng Hanging Green" at the supermarket, and the unit price of this variety of lychees was as high as 2,098 yuan per kilogram.

On July 14, the salesman of the  fruit  department in the supermarket introduced that Zengcheng Hanging Green lychees are produced in Guangdong and are picked and airlifted to Beijing, which can ensure freshness, and a better taste than other lychees. Therefore, they are more expensive. The salesman said that a box of such lychees is about 15-20 pieces, and the price is more than 1,000 yuan. The box with a lower price may cost about 900 yuan, and the average price of one piece of lychee is about 60 yuan.

The salesman also mentioned that this variety of lychee has only been on the shelves for two days. It is loved by many customers and is now out of stock.

China is a large country when it comes to lychees, not only with high production but also with high consumption. With the rise in consumer demand, domestic lychee cultivation has grown rapidly. In 2020, China's lychee production reached 2.55 million tons, accounting for more than 60% of the world's total lychee production, and it ranked first all over the world.

As the saying goes, scarce  things are expensive. Lychee production is so large, and the supply should be very abundant, but why is it sold at a sky-high price? The reason is derived from the ancient lychee tree.

For example, there is an ancient lychee tree that is more than 1,500 years old in Qinzhou, Guangxi Province , called "Lingshan Xiangli", which is a key local cultural relic. Because it is so rare, this tree can produce about 300 kg of lychees a year, it is only sold upon reservation. The lychee with the sky-high price of 1,049 yuan/kg sold by a Beijing supermarket is produced by "Zengcheng Hanging Green".

The fruit of "Hanging green" is round, but not large. When the fruit is ripe, it has a red and purple color. There is a green line running straight to the end, hence the name. It tastes sweet and refreshing and is fragrant. In 2002, a "hanging green" was auctioned for a sky-high price of 550,000 yuan, breaking a new record and being selected into the Guinness Book of Records.
