Discount grocer Aldi has served Ithaca’s Northside and nearby Fall Creek neighborhood for years, and this week the company says their newest store, in Ithaca’s Northeast, is opening on Thursday. A storefront in the Cayuga Mall off North Triphammer Road has been under construction since early spring.

When the store opens at 9am on Thursday, September 1st, the first hundred customers will receive a gift card, and shoppers can also enter a sweepstakes for a chance to win a $500 gift card.

“Our stores are designed to make grocery shopping smarter, faster and easier, and we’ve been voted the price leader for five years running,” said Aaron Sumida, Tully regional vice president for Aldi. “We have served this community for more than 24 years and are excited to continue to offer Ithaca residents an affordable way of shopping.”

The original Ithaca location at 505 Third Street was renovated five years ago, offering more of a focus on fresh produce than before. If you’re not familiar with the store, plan on bringing a quarter to release a shopping cart from the rack, bagging or boxing your own groceries at the register, and returning the cart to the track to reclaim your quarter.

The Cayuga Mall, across Triphammer from the Shops at Ithaca Mall, had a full-service grocery store for many years, until the P&C chain was acquired by Tops Friendly Markets, and the FTC forced Tops to divest stores that were too close together. The Rite Aid pharmacy and convenience store at Cayuga Mall closed soon after area Rite Aid locations were acquired by Walgreens. The plaza also features a Joann Fabric, Agway True Value Hardware, Planet Fitness, and Big Lots, as well as Sumo Japanese Sushi & Hibachi restaurants. The plaza’s Friendly’s closed earlier this summer.

There’s also a Tops Friendly Market store across the way, as well as a grocery department in Target at the north end of the Shops at Ithaca Mall and groceries at the nearby BJ’s Wholesale Club.

The first store in the Aldi discount chain was opened by the Albrecht family in Germany in 1961, and the first U.S. location opened in Iowa in 1976, the company says. There are now over 2,000 stores in 36 U.S. states. While the Aldi and Trader Joe’s chains are both owned by Albrecht family members, the two companies aren’t connected.
