Australian supermarkets prices becoming more reasonable as vegetable crops recover

Prices in the fruit and vegetable section in supermarkets around Australia are falling fast. It seems the period of insanely high fresh produce prices are finally over. It of course all comes down to the weather. After this years’ floods, growers have been able to replant, taking advantage of a wet but mild winter to bring in a bumper crop in recent weeks.

As there is now far more supply coming into supermarkets and greengrocers, prices are dropping fast. Of course, the floods weren't the only factor in high prices over autumn and winter. The rise in the costs of chemicals, fertilisers, fuel, energy and labour played a large role in high prices at the supermarket.

On shelves and in season right now are citrus, especially navel oranges, apples, pears and strawberries. Tomatoes, lettuce, zucchini, eggplant and broccoli are also cheap and readily available right now.
